Default unable to write/copy to yum.repos.d

I need to add the necessary repos to install vlc, but I get "you do not have the right permissions to write to this folder" I was able to do this in ydl 5 but not in 6.
I have added my user to the root group to see if that would help for the procedure but no change.
Then i used the terminal to copy/paste the info onto a new gedit file and then try and save it into the yum.repos.d folder but terminal freezes and i have to force quit.
Im sure its an easy fix but im tryin to do things as much as i can without looking too noobish
but would appreciate any help.

Or if you are in your regular user account open up a terminal and type in:

Code:
su password:
That gives you root permissions without having to log off and log in as root.
