Smile simple easy way to update kernal to ps3 wifi

Hello All,

I am shocked how easy this is. When you do the system updater it might take a while if you have not been keeping up with the updates like myself. I completed the updates last night starting at 2000 and it finall finished at 0000. there was tons of updates and by the way the update has the new kernal. All you have to do next is activate the kernal. here is the steps to do all. Very very simple.

TOPIC: Upgrading Kernel to enable PS3 Wifi under linux

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is only required if you are using a DVD or ISO that is older then May 2nd, 2007 or you ordered your PS3 from Terra Soft Solutions prior to May 2nd, 2007

Upgrade and Install the Kernel
This is for Users who installed Yellow Dog Linux 5 prior to the kernel updates released on May 1st 2007 that included information needed to use wifi on the PS3 under linux. This processes is not needed if you downloaded and installed a newer version of the ISO already. This process should be done regualarly as is to maintain

Once you are at the YDL Login in Screen login as a user
Click on the Yellow Dog symbol from the main shelf at the top of the screen, when logged into enlightenment
Follow the menu down, Applications > Applications > System Tools > Software Management > Software updater
You will be asked for the root password (this is a system security to protect unauthorized users from accessing places that they can cause unwanted results)
All updates should already be select, if not please select all updates
Click “Apply Updates”
Please be patient while the updates install, we have been working hard to keep our software up to date
After all the updates have been applied and installed, select “Reboot Later”

Activate The New Kernel
To activate the new kernel you must modify a file called /etc/kboot.conf; follow the steps below to complete this (WARNING!!!: this is written to work only with the default partitioning during install, if you are not using default partitioning then you will have to modify this to match your installation setup of your partitions)
Open a Terminal window by Click on the Yellow Dog icon on the task bar, selecting the following order of thing Applications > Applications > Accessories > Gnome Terminal (Terminal)
Type “su -”
If prompted enter the root password for the system that you chose during install, if you purchased your PS3 pre-installed from Terra Soft Solutions the default password is abc123
Download the new kboot.conf file by type “wget(space)http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/solutions/ydl_5.0/newwifikboot.conf”
Make a backup copy of your current kboot.conf by typing “cp /etc/kboot.conf /etc/kboot.conf.org”
Copy the new file into place by typing “cp newwifikboot.conf /etc/kboot.conf”
Type "y" to confirm overwriting the file
Type “exit” {Enter}
Type “exit” {Enter} again (This should close the terminal window)
Reboot the PS3 by logging out or linux (Yellow Dog Symbol on the task bar the select System > Log out, Confirm by Click "Yes") and then clicking “Restart” from the login Screen, Confirm by Clicking "Restart"

Default

just wanted to add that when you restart you would have to reboot the system, don't just log off and back on. When you come back in you can type the following and see if the kernal is up to date.

uname -r. You should see the new kernal there.

You can also type this to verify that your video output was set.

cat /etc/kboot.conf
