mplayer or vlcplayer?

hi,

I've installed vlc player easily enough...having trouble installing mplater.

What method did everyone follow to insall mplayer? I'm trying to insall it using the Gnome environment.....have got yumex installed but nothing happens...tried installing from mplayer website...but nada

any help would be appreciated.

is mplayer better at playing avi, mpgs than vlcplayer? vlc is adequate but full screen causes a bit of horizontal flicker
