i cant seem to get the internet working on ubuntu

can you guys tell me how to set it up? im not running wireless i have an ethernet cable

If you are in GNOME, click on the internet connection icon at the top of the screen and fool around with some settings to enable the internet. Alls I did was checked a box and it was working fine, I forget EXACTLY which box it was. It wasn't hard though...
