Default How to access files from a PC w/ Win XP

You will need:
  • A PS3 with Yellow Dog Linux (this tutorial is made for the GNOME desktop environment).
  • A PC with Windows XP.
  • They both need to be on the same network (connected through the same modem, switch or router).

Windows XP Setup:

First we need to create a Windows Workgroup.
Some people may already configured this at the first boot after a fresh install. If you already did this you can skip these steps or reconfigure/check the settings trough the exact same way.

---Step 1:
Select the directory you would like to share and click on "Share this folder" (on the left).

---Step 2:
Now click on "If you understand the security risks but want to share files without running the wizard, click here.". Press "OK"
This will launch a wizard. Click "Next >" till you get to the screen where you can select your own "computer description" and "computer name" (see below). Fill it out. Remember your "computer name", you are going to need this one later on.

---Step 3:
Click on "Next >" and type your desired "workgroup name".

---Step 4:
Click "Next >" till you get the "Please wait..." screen.

---Step 5:
When this is completed you need to select the last option shown "Just finish the wizard; I don't need....." and click on "Next >" -> "Finish".
Reboot Windows XP if needed (you will see a dialog with the question)! Repeat step 1 after the reboot.

---Step 6: Now select the check box "Share this folder on the network". Also check "Allow Network users to change my files" (optional and not recommended for security reasons). Now fill out a "share name" and press on OK. The length doesn't matter, if you get a warning about the length just click on "Yes".

Repeat step 1 followed by 6 if you want to share more directories.

Yellow Dog Linux (GNOME)
There are three ways to connect to your shared files. Use the one that suites you best.
Press CTRL+D (bookmark) while connected to your network. This will let you easy access your shared files from the top panel (Places).

Method 1
Click on "Places" on the top panel. Then click on Network Servers -> Windows network. Now you can click on your Windows workgroup.

Method 2
Open up the File Browser ("Computer" on your desktop) or Firefox. In the Location bar type :
Code:
smb://COMPUTERNAME
In my case, it would be: smb://anthr4x.

Method 3
Open up the File Browser ("Computer" on your desktop). Click on Network -> Windows network. Now you will see your Windows workgroup.

I would appreciate some feedback on this tutorial.
Enj0y!
