In the downloads section is a file called vlc.zip
Get that and download it to your PS3.
In there, you have
1) all the RPM files for VLC including dependencies
2) new yum.conf file to be placed into /etc directory (login as root and rename your original yum.conf to yum.backup or something like that)
3) Go into your terminal and type these commands as root (or type su to gain root privileges):
rpm --import [Please register to see this link. ]
rpm --import [Please register to see this link. ]
4) What I did was randomly click the RPM files and move them to another directory as they successfully installed, if I received a dependency error, I'd find the file that I needed and go to install that one. It doesn't take too long.
4) Finally, install the VLC included in this package.
I've been able to play every mp3, xvid, divx, mpeg, etc that I have thrown at this. Also remember the tip that the first poster mentioned (start up YDL in the gnome interface or else VLC isn't going to show up under applications).
Here's the link to the videolan client you need to install.

People have told me that there are some dependencies missing. If you have troubles either search for them or post in here and I'll try to find them.

ADDED:
Make sure you delete the # character before baseurl in these files:
1. Log in as root
2. Open File Manager Program (like Nautilus)
3. Select File System -> etc -> yum.repos.d
4. Open yellowdog-base.repo
5. Delete the # character in front of baseurl (ie. change from #baseurl -> baseurl)
6. Click Save
7. Do the same for other 2 files
Thanks, Zoned! I was able to install VLC without much problems. I did run into some dependency problems, but that was solved in no time. I tried to upload the complete rpms that were needed for my install. I hope you don't mind. Hopefully the file will be approved so that others can use it. What I found out was you had to rename #baseurl before you try to install the vlc distribution itself.
Awesome juanzone, thanks for the good debugging. Please edit your post and be very explicit about what you renamed the baseurl and what else you did so others can follow easily. I will gladly approve your upload. thanks
This is what I did to install VLC on YDL for PS3. My apologies to Zoned for taking parts of his post verbatim.
I) Login as root to make things easier.
II) Downloads
1) In the downloads section is a file called updated vlc dependencies.zip Get that and download it to your PS3.
2) Download onto your PS3 desktop the VLC distibution at: [Please register to see this link. ]
III) Installation
1) Form the updated vlc dependencies, extract the folder "rpms" to the desktop which will contain the subfolders "RPM" and "ydyum"
2) The RPM folder would have files of the needed VLC dependencies
3) The ydyum folder will have the new yum.conf
4) First, rename your original yum.conf (located in the /etc directory) to yum.backup before moving the new yum.conf into the /etc directory
5) Go into your terminal and type these commands one after the other (again, you must be logged in as root to do this)
rpm --import [Please register to see this link. ]
rpm --import [Please register to see this link. ]
6) Delete the "#" character before "baseurl" in these files:
a) With nautilus, navigate to /File System then to /etc then to /yum.repos.d
b) Open the "yellowdog-base.repo" file mentioned above (just right click and edit as text)
c) Look for and delete the "#" character before the word "baseurl" (change from #baseurl to baseurl)
d) Click Save
e) Do the same for other 2 files
7) What I did was randomly click the RPM files and move them to another directory as they successfully installed. You can probably click on most of them randomly, but make sure the last 4 you install are in this order:
Finally, install the VLC distribution that you downloaded above.
IV) You may start VLC by typing in vlc in your terminal window. Also, you may add the Videolan player as part of your application list to make it easier to launch. As mentioned, I've also been able to play every mp3, xvid, divx, mpeg, etc that I have thrown at this.
Er, which downloads section? The one on VLC's homepage? I don't see anything there. Nor do I see a downloads page here.
[EDIT] Ah nevermind, the site was being redone. Thanks.
[EDIT 2] Above post worked fine, thanks.
[EDIT 3] Hm, desn't seem to play this avi right, the video display is totally off. Sound is fine though.
I do have a quick question.....What is the benefit of installing VLC on the PS3 YDL? Isn't the point of VLC to be installed on the desktop you want to stream video from and then use the Web Navigator on the PS3 to go the url of the VLC?
You could use it that way but lets think. If I have an avi file or a mpg or whatever, and I am in Linux on my PS3 which has a nice harddrive and can accept an external harddrive, and it is hooked to my nice HD plasma or whatever, then THAT is my video player, store the files on the hard drive, why waste latency or overhead in streaming? I want HD output as pure as possible, therefore minimize the sources and processing.
But yea, you could ALSO stream and browse to it. But not the same picture result in a browser.
Ok well then why use the VLC Player instead of another media player....what benefit do you get from the VLC player? It seems to me you could just use another media player and you don't really need all the extra LAN Video software.
ahhh, NOW you are getting to the real deal, its the ability of VLC to handle its codecs and display options better than most if not all other media players for Linux. You will see VLC as being recommended more and more when users complain that they can't decode certain files in Mplayer or that the video is out of sync with sound. Not that VLC is perfect, it is not, but its a fairly robust overall tool.
