Mplayer - How to Install on PS3

I have downloaded and installed Mplayer successfully, but it gives me an error message when I try to play my dvds this is the message I get.

"Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device."

What does this mean?? How do I get this corrected so I can play my DVD they are not blu ray just regular dvd movies.

I'm totally noob to Linux, I just bought PS3 and Install Ubuntu and tried to install Mplayer with this "How to" but I end on step 2 "Open a terminal window in your PS3 (logged in as root)
My question...how can I loggin as ROOT ? Or what is this Root??

Ok, I just got this problem solved.
Now I'm root and succesfully got through STEP1 and STEP2 but problem is in STEP3
...when I type "MAKE" it throw this message:

Makefile:7: config.mak: No such file or directory
make: *** No rule to make target `config.mak'. Stop.
root@ivanka-desktop:~/MPlayer-1.0rc1#

Anybody knows what I've suposed to do Or what I'm doing wrong?
