Default Increasing the preformance of your Linux Distro ( Particularly Fedora and YDL)

There is a way of majorly increasing the preformance of your PS3 Linux by shutting down some programs that might other wise be left off.

NOTE: I DISABLED THESE PROGRAMS IN MY BEST INTREST THAT I DIDN'T NEED THEM ANYMORE. ALSO YOU HAVE TO DISABLE THEM IN RUNLEVEL 3 AND 5.

Here are the programs that you can disable:

* anacron
* atd
* avahi-daemon
* bluetooth
* cpuspeed
* cups
* hidd
* hplip
* ip6tables
* iprinit
* iprdump
* iprupdate
* isdn
* mcstrans
* mdmonitor
* nfslock
* pcscd
* restorecond
* rpcbind
* rpcgssd
* rpcimapd
* sendmail
* setroubleshoot
* smartd
* sshd
* yum-updatesd

After that you will be able to see a significant change in the way your Linux distro operates.

That is a good idea, can you post a quick how-to for everyone, and include the runlevel instructions. thanks!

Yes, just tell the NOOBS how you disable the programs, they won't know how to do it unless you tell them how. thx!

Ok well
TO THE NOOBS:

If you want to go ahead and proceed with doing this fairly easy task, log into GNOME becasue I barely use the KDE or Enlightenment desktop. and do the following:

1.Go to Applications--->System Tools--->Services

2.Type in your password if necesary.

3.Look at the list on your bottom left and deselect the programs I have listed above. (I disabled each one one by one. What I mean is that I deselected a program and clicked stop for everyone just to make sure.)

4.Usually in mine, it defaults to runlevel 5. So if you are done with stopping all the programs click save at the top and look under the Edit Runlevel tab. Select Runlevel 3 and do # 3 again.

5.Click save and reboot.

Now when you enter you should, at the least experience a little faster production.

Hello and to my sense it doesn't. It just makes things go alot faster when I try to multitask. Like for example when I tried to compile SDLMAME I had to close all programs shutdown all things that I had running in the background like IM and leave the ps3 alone until it finished what it was doing. That was before I shutdown the services in it. After I shut down the services, I compiled snes9x 1.51 GTK and I could still browse the internet in opera but I still exited out of IM just to make sure It won't log me out because of all the processes.

OK. Thanks for the answer !

THE major problem for me (and it is for all the linux distros...)
still is the boot time...

Does anyone knows a Linux distro that boots quickly ?
