Installing Linux over previous installation

Once you have Linux installation carved out on your PS3, and you wish to try a different distribution, is it necessary to wipe the hard drive again?

E.g., I currently have YDL installed. I wish to install Gentoo. Can I just loadup another OTHEROS.BLD and assume it will overwrite the existing otheros.bld completely and precede with the new distribution install?

Or must I backup my PS3 partition, wipe the disk with a quick format, restore my PS3 partition and proceed?

as far as i know from switching over to ubuntu, i had to use the format utility and d/led a SPECIFIC otheros.bld for ubuntu, search for it on here or google, shouldn't be hard to come across...
