In a Resistance: Fall of Man document detailing the game's development, Insomniac Games has revealed that only "10-20% total SPU utilization" was achieved for the PlayStation 3 launch title.

SPU utilization is something Insomniac has openly discussed in the past, last November telling VideoGamer.com that it's a process that will see "major benefits" for years to come.

"The tech and gameplay teams have moved tons of things over to the SPUs that used to run on the PPU. Collision and physics are entirely running on SPUs now, which allows us to put much more on the screen at once than we were able to with Resistance. Moving more and more code to the SPUs is an ongoing process and I think we'll continue to see major benefits from this for several more years," said Insomniac's Chief Creative Officer Brian Hastings in our exclusive interview.

Looking at the newly released Resistance 2 screens Insomniac has certainly been busy optimizing those SPUs; the game looks stunning.

I believe Uncharted was said to push 30% max, so you can bet your arse 2nd gen games on PS3 are gonna knock your socks off.

I guess it dosnt suprise me. As with all console they dont get pushed all that hard, at the start as they are trying to work out the hardware. Just like the ps2. Look at how good the game looked towards the end of its life. As the years go bye the game will look better and better. Thats how its allways been.

i cant imagine how good would be the games when they use 80 or 90 % of the PS3

30-40%

I doubt any first gen games will push anything close to 50% of the hardware.
Once these devs starting making their 3rd and 4th gen games......watch out.
(thats when Dual Layer BD will come into play as well)

Well considering, MGS 4 used a dual layer BD, Im surprised if it didnt push less than 50%.

That said, it would be interesting to see just how much it used the SPU's
