Default No Accelerated Video Support In Linux

The PS3's hypervisor controls all access to the PS3 graphics hardware. The hypervisor only allows access to a framebuffer, and even then it's not direct access. The linux side writes to a frame buffer in main memory, then uses the hypervisor to trigger a DMA transfer that copies this to the real frame buffer on the GPU.

Therefore, we do NOT have accelerated graphix or direct graphix support in Linux. No Linux distro, Yellow Dog, Fedora Core whatever version, Gentoo, will be able to get around this Hypervisor limitation on the graphix until Sony releases the drivers for the GPU (or the community somehow hacks a driver).

Default Re: No Accelerated Video Support In Linux

So basically, it's only licensed posessors of the GameOS SDK who get to play with the PS3's graphics at full pelt...

...perhaps if linux could be run as a Game within the GameOS...? Maybe the Knoppix folk can help out...

Anyway, besides satisfying the inner geek within by installing linux on my PS3, I'm really only here because I want my PS3 to act as a sexy Media Centre PC ( which would cost me a good deal more than £425 to build )

If a GameOS developer wrote a GameOS 'game' that could play anything thrown at it, including stuff sitting on my PC hard drive other the network, I'd pay £50 for that just to get some sleep, and use linux for something else ( ..now what? )

...either that or wait 'till Sony can do all that in XMB via firmware update.
:-}

I'm no computer geek, but since the Other OS can't use the accelerated graphics, is the ps3 strong enough to play say HD videos (H264)?

And also, around how good of graphics (what kinds of games) would be supported PC game-wise?
