Would an External Hardrive work for the PS3's Linux OS? Thanks to my 10 GB piece given to Linux i have only 5 GB of free space to put my media on it....yea....
Yes, well there are 2 approaches. One is to upgrade the internal harddrive of the PS3, (it won't affect the Game OS which is stored in Flash memory). I will post a How To on this in this board. You would have to re-install Linux. The prob is that the Game OS (which is running the PS3, even when Linux is booted, Linux boots on top of the GameOS Hypervisor) won't allow any choices on partitioning the internal drive, other than 10 gig for one partition (either Game system or Linux), and the rest for the other. on the internal HD. The partition for the Game OS is used for game saves, demos, pics, music etc.
The second approach is to hook up a USB external HD and Linux should recognize the drive, you may need to mount it in Linux. I will get some info for you on how to do this. thanks for the question.
That's a great querstion, it was actually one I was going to ask myself haha. What I suggest doing, which is what I plan on doing, is purchasing a 2.5 hard drive to replace the 20gig, if you do in fact have a 20 gig or plan on purchasing one. Simply for the fact that, even if you're not going to be running anything off the internal hard drive, 20 gigs can't hold too many demos or trailers. And for people like me that don't need all the stuff the $600 one comes with, it's cheaper to just upgrade the internal hard drive to a larger one, and still be under $600.
If you're looking for a internal hard drive to run linux and everything off of, i'd suggest one of these two-
Budget- 40gig SATA 2.5- $45.99 - [Please register to see this link. ]
Higher Budget- 160gig SATA- $144.99 [Please register to see this link. ]
If you're looking to purchase a larger external hard drive I'd suggest one or all of these-
Budget- 160gig SATAII- $52.99- [Please register to see this link. ]
Higher Budget- 320gig SATAII $99.99- [Please register to see this link. ]
Now you can spend more then that, but those are just the hard drives that I feel are at great prices. The 160gig at $52.99 really is an awesome deal. $50 bucks for 160gigs is awesome.
And you can use any external enclosure you want. They range in price from $25+
ive also been wondering this. is it possible to take out the hdd out of the ps3 then hook up an external hd via usb so that the ps3 only reads the external hard drive? i know that if u upgrade the internal hard drive inside the ps3 to a larger one, the ps3 asks you to format the new hard drive and ur ready to go. will that work as the same if i took out the internal hard drive and just connected a external usb hard drive? im sorry if i confuss you guys :-}
The PS3 uses the internal hard drive for its own operating system functions and for games and saves. External USB drives are optional, but aren't used as a primary hard drive. If you want, you could upgrade the internal drive to a larger one, then use the original drive as an external USB drive as well for extra storage.
PS, you can also use USB memory sticks or the memory cards as swap space.
