Default 40 gig PS3 specs and why Sony went there

Be aware of what Sony has done in the 40 gig version:

It's now well known that the 40-GB PlayStation 3 is the product of design revisions that cut costs. The smaller HDD, removal of the memory card slots and third USB port, and lack of a PS2 Emotion Engine for backwards compatibility (can't play most ps2 games on the 40 gig) were all efforts to allow the console to be sold at lower prices.

According to ComputerBase.com, Sony has quietly shifted from 90-nm production processes for the Cell processor and NVIDIA GPU to more modern and efficient 65-nm production. The change mirrors, to a degree, the recent discovery that Microsoft has shifted to 65-nm production for the Xbox 360's CPU.

Shrinking the production process of a chip results in lower manufacturing costs due to the fact that more chips can be produced in each silicon wafer. The smaller internal architecture of the 65-nm chips also results in lower power consumption and as such less waste heat production. As such, the new 40-GB PS3s should run cooler and draw less power than older models. Though lack of PS2 backwards compatibility may be a downer for some, environmentally conscious gamers might appreciate the smaller energy footprint the new PS3 offers.

Japanese outlet Famitsu is also reporting that their 40-GB PS3 no longer features Super Audio CD support. Though likely not something the average American consumer either knows or cares about, Sony has apparently pulled the decoder chip for the high-grade music format from the revised PS3 as yet another way to shave the machine's production costs.

I heard a rumor that the average cost of a ps3 is actually more than the retail cost of the system... they plan to make all of their profit off of the games... hold any water?

yes.......Sony's stance has always been take a hit on hardware early and make most of it up on software later(licensing, development support, bd mastering, etc.). Of course, after reducing the production costs of the hardware it will eventually turn a profit. As did the PS1 and PS2. Although its been rumored that this is the largest hit they have taken on hardware(several hundred dollars per unit instead of a hundred dollors or less). With the CELL chip die shrinking in size(90nm to 65nm to 45nm) costs are lessened, a well as blu-ray laser diode costs coming down the hit they take lessens over time.

personaly when I found out that the 80 gig was going out, I said to myself I need to get one. I spent lots of cash on games, Newer PC, 360's , and DS's and a PSP, nothing really stood out. My cousin and I said hell, we will pick up one each. And to tell the truth I have never been happier dopping 500+ on a system. Some of the choice titles have really made me happy. It had been 10 years since I had an awesome time with a game that just drew me in. I plan on keeping my 80, for development, and picking up another. as for backwards compat. with the ps2 I picked up a Silver Ps2 and and one of the VAST spin off memory mods. awesome. I am currently working on a small game myself. I just miss this title in the market. Its been A while sisnce I have really dove in C++ but I hope to have a small pice to mess with soon. I have found out that the PS3 has some delvelopment issues that will not allow much accses to the GPU. I guess I will keep up on software development.
