Default PS3 wont read any discs!!HELP

My PS3 is a launch unit and recently it wont read or load any discs, game or music. The other functions work as designed such as downloading and internet stuff..Any ideas fellas?I sent it to Sony but all they will do is offer me a refirb unit for $140.What can I do to fix it besides buying a slushbox 360 or gettn a 40 gb or 80 gb for more money??I spent like $600 on this one so I would like to not buy another unit...

uhm yeah unless you have warranty you are probably screwed. Maybe try opening it, i don't know. If it comes down to it take Sony's refurb offer. Whatever you do don't get burnbox 360. My friends melted 2 times, Literally melted! Good luck

Take the refurbished one, it's the only way you'll have a fully BC PS3. Pay the $150 and you get a refurbished 20/60(which ever one you have) that are selling in Japan for double the money, and I'm not surprised about that either.

there's no need to open it, you can take the drive in and out without voiding the warranty, and there is nothing else you would need access to by further opening it and voiding the warranty. Did you ask if they could repair it? Or did they only offer a refurb? This is a rare but known issue(optical drive goes defective)

Ok heres the story..Sony says they dont repair anymore they will just replace it...I did send it off to Sony but it was out of warranty by a bit..Yes they offered me a refirb unit(I have the 60GB)and from what I see they are now selling the 40gb or 80 with the latter still being able to BC..My question is this..does this sound like a hard drive concern? If so I can upgrade and replace it at the same time so Ill wait for an answr..if it is the optical drive can I buy one of those too?

sorry it took so long and no, this is probably not a Hard Drive issue.
Have you downloaded any demo's/psn games and installed them to HDD?
(do they still work)

I believe your issue is with the Blu-Ray optical drive - like I said...its a known, albeit rare malfunction.
