Hi, I got yumex installed with the help of that dowloadble file, now another question. To install something like VLC or Mplayer can I use yumex to do this or do I have to follow the instructions in these forums where it gets a little complicated again. I want to find the easiest way to upgrade linux. Also do these players play .wmv files and is there something that plays power point microsoft files.
Re: Can you install VLC or Mplayer in Linux with Yum
Try mplayer first. Before you install from yumex, you have to make sure you have ALL of the repos files from the top fo this thread, otherwise you may miss some dependencies. [Please register to see this link. ]
Then you can TRY it with yumex and report back. Look in the How To Install Mplayer thread because you will still have to configure the subfont as instructed. report back.
Yes, you can play .wmv files with either player. Open Office Presentation can display powerpoint. Go 4 it.

Re: Can you install VLC or Mplayer in Linux with Yum
I got VLC 0.8.5 installed with yumex, there is a update to 0.8.6 but I read somewhere that it doesn't work properly, any truth to this. Anyways VLC works when I dowload a mpeg to the desktop and open it with VLC but how do I set VLC to just open the video. It always goes to totem which doesn't work with anything, and if I select other I can't find VLC. I want to be able to play videos of the net without saving them.
Re: Can you install VLC or Mplayer in Linux with Yum
I used yumex to install mplayer, I can open it from the GUI but when I try to play a file I get this error" error/initializing the selected video.out (-vo) device" Please help now what do I do? Also when I'm in firefox and I dowload a video Mplayer takes over but I have no video and the sound is distorted.
Re: Can you install VLC or Mplayer in Linux with Yum
install mplayer from command line like we taught you in the thread How To Install Mplayer. yumex is pretty untested for this and doesn't always get the right dependencies, especially since we can't verify what repos you are accessing with yumex. you guys want windows functionality, but this is Linux, you have to hand bang some installs. different world.
Re: Can you install VLC or Mplayer in Linux with Yum
I installed VLC with Yumex without too many problems, ran into dependency probs with that SLC thing but was easily resolved but installing from the YDL ISO DVD.
