mplayer cannot open/initialize video_out device

I've installed mplayer on YDL, but every time I try to play some video it says "Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device".

I've setting vo= to a few different things (including sdl) and changing some stuff in the Preferences in the UI, but I haven't been able to get anything to work.

I'm connecting via HDMI, any ideas to get it to work?

try running this in a terminal:>

mplayer -vo sdl -ao sdl filename
