D-Pad is not working on xmame

I have a microsoft sidewinder usb gamepad and the buttons work fine it is just the D-Pad that isn't functioning. How can I configure this to work. I used the control center in KDE and the gamepad is functioning fine D-Pad and buttons, but when I go to xmame only the buttons work. How can I configure it so the D-Pad will be functional?

I have xmame & xmame.SDL as well as gxmame frontend
