Default Mplayer question

ok, so i think that i installed mplayer, but how do i start it? i type "mplayer" into terminal and all it gives me is a list of controls for mplayer. ex. it says :select video output, fast forward. stuff like that. Did i successfully instal Mplayer, and if so is it possible to have a desktop icon. Oh yeah i also tried running "mplayer " and it says file not found, and failed to open. Any help would be nice.

ok so i just figured out that if i type "mplayer" and than drag the file into terminal i can watch it. Isnt there a way where i can actually have a desktop icon of mplayer?? also, i've noticed in some of the desktop pictures on the site, mplarer is open and there is also a toolbar that you can use to play, pause, fast forward, etc. the video. How do you get this toolbar to show up. All i get is the video playing in the box.

Look under sound and video applications, there should be a mplayer icon in there. Right click on it and you can move it to the desktop.

I have installed mplayer twice with this sites instructions and both times a launch icon showed up in the
video/audio apps. I was using the gnome desktop. I don't know what to tell ya, maybe try installing it again.

I guess you didn't install it in the Gnome desktop then. Try installing it again with the instructions on this site
in the gnome desktop. Do exactly what the instructions say and it should work.

Make sure you skin is in the right file. It sounds to me that you have mplayer installed and can play videos, but you dont have the skin set up correctly. I named my skin "default" and that works for me...

I have downloaded and installed Mplayer successfully, but it gives me an error message when I try to play my dvds this is the message I get.

"Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device."

What does this mean?? How do I get this corrected so I can play my DVD they are not blu ray just regular dvd movies.
