Q: Is possible to emulate PS2 games on PS3?

I've been searching around and hoping to find a way to play PS2 games on my 40GB PAL PS3. I've come to the conclusion that it's impossible. So last night it struck me, what about emulation? I emulated PS2 games on my PC that I had before this one, and I want to belive that the PS3 is better then that old piece of crap . So is it possible to install a PS2 emulator and emulate both games that are bought and games that are backed up. If not possible, what is it that stands in the way for it beeing possible?

Currently, it's not possible. What stands in the way is getting the console to execute unsigned code. It has been rumored that Sony will bring back BC in the form of an update, for the 40GB consoles and all thereafter, but at the time being, it cannot be done.

yes, once Sony can fully emulate the Graphics Synthesizer(GE), then PS2 will become 100% backwards compatible.

When Sony do figure out how to emulate GE will it be possible to play backup PS2 games trough an ps2 emulator on say ubuntu? Or will it only be possible to play original PS2 games (which is good enough for me)

you'll have to play the official version(either on disc or via PSN) if you are going to play them through XMB(ps3 os). Sony will not allow pirated copies of the games to play. Someone may eventually come out with a mod and/or custom f/w that allows such a task, but who knows.

hey if u want to play ps2 games there is multiple choices either
1. sell ur 40gb for 60gb
2. buy a ps2 and play it from there
3. (i dont know correct me if im wrong) u can install windows xp on ur ps3 than install a ps2 emultor and play from there( i dont even know if there is a ps2 emultor or if the ps3 is not strong enough).
