Linux Newbie Alert**

I'm trying my hand at gentoo and this is my first experience with Linux. I know I should go with YDL instead but I'm ultimately looking to run emulators and gentoo was mentioned as running it the best due to the emerge packaging system.

Anyway, I followed the instructions found here:
http://ps3wiki.qj.net/index.php/Gentoo_-_The_next_step

What I got was a linux install that let's me enter username and pw (root) and when I get in I am greeted with a black desktop and a toolbar that I've managed to miniimize to about 10 pixels in size but doesn't appear to do too much anyway. I won't ask you guys to waste your time on me but can someone point me towards a doc I can read?

TIA

hey guys i have one more question.
i successfully completed the gentoo install but i noticed that i made a typo in the kboot.conf file. I tried to edit it again but for some reason i cant. does anyone know how i can just edit the kboot.conf file instead of reinstalling gentoo?

I believe you are seeing the "Fluxbox" desktop.
Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

Within that toolbar was your access to the applications and such?

I should step aside and let someone with linux experience step up.

Sorry, just trying to help.

ok this is going to sound really really stupid but....
asong wrote a fw add ons or whtever for the make.conf file..
and under LDFLAGS="-W1,-01"
is that W1 or Wl see online t looks like l , but i copied it to a print out and it looks like 1, it looks just like i wrote it. things is with whtever my comp uses l's and 1's looks alike.
and now lookin at this it seems clear that its an l not a oneso answer this please. Is the "wl,-01" case sensitive i see it here and on another sight and one is lower case and the other capitol

LDFLAGS:

the Wl is the capital letter W followed by the lower letter l (not a 1)

the O1 is the capital letter O (not zero) followed by the number 1

Help!!!! I am the biggest noob when it comes to anything with computers. But I followed the instructions to install Gentoo on my PS3 with http://ps3wiki.qj.net/index.php/Gentoo_Howto

so I rebooted after i supposedly installed it and it did show up in the proper resolution i set it at, but then something happened, While booting up at the black penguin screen, when it checks the root filesystem i get this error message:

ext2fs_check_if_mount: No such file or directory while determining whether /dev/ROOT is mounted.
fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/ROOT
/dev/ROOT:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), the the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternative superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

* Filesystem couldn't be fixed [!!]
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D to continue): "

And that is my terrible story. I've done this install two times now, and formatted my PS3 4 times, 1 being a full format...I can't do anything at all, not even booting back into the PS3 OS! Any commands I input is met with an Errno error. Help please!!!
