On Gentoo, there isn't any install app that does this for you automatically. However, there is a liveCD you can download and burn that will get you started. It's still text based install. But in all honesty, I don't really think this matters, since the text install is soooo easy. Just follow the directions.
On a regular PC, I can understand how this can get complicated, since everyone's systems are vastly different from one another. But on PS3, there's really 2 different things. Either install it on a 10GB partition, or 50GB partition. And that's about it. Also, on Gentoo's PS3, stage4 tarballs are available online. So, in my opinion, the install process is much quicker than the CD. Just follow the official install instructions, and you'll be up and running in about 30 minutes. The one that's posted earlier here is a complete instruction set for the Gentoo 64-bit userland of stage3 tarball. To be safe, you should always follow the official install script as they may be changed by the creator of the stage4 tarball. 64-bit userland as I mentioned has some issues right now based on my testing. So, I would strongly recommend the 32-bit userland.
If you follow the official installation instructions. This tarball has everything pre-merged, including the PS3 toolchains. If you have the means, use a memorystcik, external usb drive, or even an SD card to load the official otheros files from Sony's site. Once you get that done, format your PS3 hard drive. 10GB or 50GB linux doesn't make a difference in the install steps except for the actual number of cylinders that you define. You can see my post #2 on this thread. Other than that, everything should work fine. If you're planning on using an upgraded hard drive, you'll need to figure out the actual cylinder count to enable 100GB+ linux partition, or simply use +100000M in the place for +9000M in the official install script. Basically the official install script was written with a 20GB PS3. So, if you follow those directions without changing that value, you'll be wasting a lot of space. Goodluck. |

I don't know what you're talking about with the notepad. The posted instructions are there so that you can see the prompt, and know what to type in.
Quick correction: You will need to download the liveCD and burn it, other wise you won't be able to boot to livecd prompt. My mistake. But you don't have to worry about the tools chains and the add-ons. |

You guys are going to bang your heads on the wall for not doing it earlier. When you first begin to use emerge, you'll see what I am talking about. It's that easy.
Be sure to read up on portage and correct way of using emerge function. You'll be experts in no time.... [Please register to see this link. ] |
