That was first on my list once I got everything set to recompile the kerne. And...it works!

I've set the margin values for the 720p scaled mode in static const struct ps3fb_res_table ps3fb_res to a lower number than default, as so:

{ 1280, 720, 30, 10 , 0},

and also made the corresponding changes in static const struct fb_videomode ps3fb_modedb[] as so:

/* 720p */
"720p", 60, 1220, 700, 13481, 298, 148, 57, 44, 80, 5,

On my screen, there is now a touch of vertical overscan so I need to decrease the value down to maybe 1220x695 then run some more detailed tests - so far I have only checked the overscan on the command line - I haven't even started X / KDE so I have no idea if this has any impact on performance.

Having looked in modedb.c - it's the standard list of modes that comes with the linux kernel, it's not used by the ps3fb driver.

That said - modedb.c does include a 1366x768 mode with all the correct timing info in the same format as ps3fb.c's modedb table.

As a quick hack I have tried replacing the 720P mode in ps3fb.c with the 1366x768 mode from modedb.c. Unfortunately the kernel simply fails to boot in this situation. I'm unsure if I just screwed up the transplant or not, so it might be worth others giving it a try.

I just registered here to say THANKS! I was tearing my hair out over this stupid overscan / border stuff, and this thread saved me from a life of insanity. The tweak works great, granted I used it to fix my 480p / 1080i resolutions (TV don't support 720p), but it's the same idea...

624x432 sure beats the hell out of 576x384 (when your res is this low, anything helps!)

why havnt you just tried (sudo ps3videomode -v (your choice video mode) -f
it worked for me no more borders

All I had to do to get rid of the black borders on my Hitachi 42" plasma was to hit the aspect button on the TV remote. Using the ps3-video-mode -3 -f would bring up the overscan problem. Changing to 16:9 standard 2 fixed it right up.
