Default Question: The holy grail of 1366x768 native resolution?

Hi from a newbie.

Firstly, thanks haxen, asung and other members for your already great contributions to this young forum. The detailed accounts of your real experiences with setting up PS3 linux is infinitely helpful (especially for a total linux noob such as I).

I have yet to get a hold of a PS3, but will be attempting to set up Gentoo when I do, paired with my plasma TV (with a native resolution of 1366x76. After extensive reading around here and there, I anticipate difficulties with getting linux to display in my TV's native resolution (which I've called the "holy grail" as it is such a common HDTV resolution, yet so poorly supported in other consumer devices including consoles). Displaying text and graphics in its native resolution would ensure the sharpest detail and readability.

I see it as a possibility in the future, though perhaps not with the current state of things. Does anyone have any ideas?

I have a few specific questions too.
1. Is there an undisclosed ps3videomode number that outputs 1366x768?
2. I understand that there is a WXGA mode, but it is really 1280x768?
3. would xorg.conf modifications have any result on the display resolution?
4. would changing the "modeline" in xorg.conf have any result on the display resolution? (I could easily work out the "modeline" for my TV)
6. could we lobby for 1366x768 resolution support, or indeed any custom resolution?

Thanks for your help.

Onanie, good questions. I run my PS3 onto a 42" NEC XR4 plasma with 768 lines native as well. Its really about the horizontal lines, not the vertical. 720p uses 720 lines of progressive scan lines that will fill whatever width you have. After that it is 1080i and then 1080p in terms of horizontal resolution. You can run your HDMI or component feed from PS3 in 720p and have a highend upscaler upscale that to 768 to get "native" resolution, but at these resolutions you have to have reference type equipment to really see the difference.

THe WXGA is really for computer monitor output and won't work on your TV or won't display motion very well. You can finetune xorg.conf but really to standard type inputs that a plasma normally expects, again the industry standards of 480i or p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p. Don't overthink this problem, the guys at AVSForums love to tinker with upscalers and such but really you will be very pleased with the 1080 or 720 displays. Also, no accelerated graphics drivers for Linux yet either.

Thanks for the reply, Haxen.

My plasma will accept 1366x768 at 60hz through DVI-HDCP, specifically. I am very keen for PS3 to output this resolution natively. A video processor wouldn't solve the problem directly, as it will just be in place of the TV's scaler - that is, there will still be scaling done, even if it is done better. Hope this makes sense.
