Gentoo..GOOD SWITCH??

ok i got my ps3 about 2 months ago and decided fro some unknown reason to install another os. i started with FC5 but i felt it was slow read about a few other ppl that the same, then i moved to YDL, but had more than enough trouble getting things to down everytime i found a fix i wound up having to fix another file or something i did more fixing than using just about 2 weeks ago i read about gentoo and decided it might the best move or atleast was toldit might be that it was simpler and quicker and all that jazz. but now im having lots of trouble just getting this thing to install ive tried like 3 diff guides http://<working on 3rd now> at least 10 times each and i still cant get this going i think i almost had a few times but my noobness got in the way. and &*%$ed the whole thing up.

I s this move gentoo a good move,, is it worth all my headache rather, cos honestly if ihad not paid so much for this thing i would have tossed it out the window a month ago. any insite or atleast point in the right direction would mean soo much. a lil wisdom if u will plase thanks soo much

ok im now following the guide from this site and i have just now recieve my first error;
tar: stage4-ppc64-ps3_32ul.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable : exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: error exit delayed from previous errors

I thought it might have something to do with the cammand:
tar -xjpf stage-ppc64-ps3_32ul.tar.bz2
since that was not wht i just finsished downloading, i changed it, removing the ppc64 and replacing it with 970 like the file i downloaded making it look like this.
tar -xjpf stage-970-ps3_32ul.tar.bz2


is this going to be a problem or should i have taken the chance to change the 970 part of the name and made it ppc64 for some reason. whn i downloaded i had a chance to change the name

the file looks scrambled liek see how yours is

stage4-ppc64-ps3_32ul.tar.bz2

a normal tar zip is liek this

stage4-ppc64-ps3_32ul.tar.bz

no 2 at the end since its a tar binary zip try removing the 2 off it n if not thn its odd lol maybe someone else coudl help

But s for an update. i gotten to something i dont know wht it is i cant say it is a desktop altho it does have a few windows like for entering commands think is called XTERM, it also has a clock<time is way off, but uhhmm yea its a clock> i finished the whole guide on this sight and even started workin a lil on wht asong was talking about. but i still cannot install anything no matter wht i try, and my background is still black, wonder if this has anything to do with my earlier post.



btw i did get to this point once before using the guide at wiki but i had a funny greenis grey screen then and the same xterm thing no clockthat time tho. Wht is this somekinda "You're almost there" thing? or ar "UH_OH wtf did u do, u really mucked up" thing?

sorry for ths but i forgot to say that everytime i see the tar.bz2 thing. it always has the 2 on the end i neverr saw it without. maybe im following the "lets confuse the new guy" guides

ok update
by some manner of luck i have found my way into fluxbox, however i cant read a thing, at least not without a magnifier. how do i fix this?

ok another update, i found this error whnever i try to emerge anything

ERROR: net-fs/samba-3.0.24 failed
no matter wht i try ti install i get this. is this my fault
and i keeps telling me that /root/livecd/overlays/portage is not a valid directory

Hey Kenai, whats up?

Yes, the bz2 is a vaild extension for archives build that way.

You have to check yourself to see if /root/livecd/overlays/portage is a valid directory on your PS3, do you know how to check this?

Also, your make.conf file may not be set up right. Cut and paste the whole terminal session messages after trying an emerge, and include the emerge command as well, and post them here.

lol yea haxen im in over my head, u lost me at "cut and paste the whole terminal session" lol

hoever again thru some strock of luck i have a kde desktop and mplayer, currently looking to my memstick to get music and pics on it. and btw i donot know how to check and see if /root/livecd/overlays/portage is a live directory. im kinda learning as go, u know.
