Default Reasons for you running Linux on your PS3?

Just thought I'd start a post to find out everyones reasons for doing so.

My reason for wanting to traces back to me wanting a mac mini for a mediia center and me being a fan of gaming. Those of you un- familier with mac minis, they cost as much as the 60gig PS3 does. I've heard about people running linux on their PS3's, so I figured out, the PS3 can do much more then the mac mini, for roughly the same price.

Plus, I've been a PC gamer for years now, I'm now in college, and don't really want to spend hundreds of dollars often to be able to play new games ever 6 months.

The benefits I can get for using a PS3 and with Linux-

-Play killer looking games that will only look better over time
-Watch Blu-Ray movies
-Play ripped movies, .iso's, emulators, back up my games(maybe). and my 11,000+ songs
-Have a gaming rig and media center PC all in one
-To build a media center PC that can come close to doing what the PS3 does, I'd have to spend more then what some cars cost.
- For $600 I get a PS3, a fully functioning computer, and enough external storage for all my media files, you can't even build a HTPC for under $600 that can play HD movies, video cards that support HDCP are atleast $160 alone.

So what are your reasons for running a version of Linux? A "Wow" factor, a cheap computer that can play games, maybe a reason like mine? Or just because you can?

We're natural geeks, and we're compelled to do so.... :P

Girls dig it! Next time you have a 'friend' over in your dorm, make sure you show her the linux on PS3

Seriously, it's nice to do email, web browsing, etc..., on a 60" 1080P display. And we're all looking forward to hypervisor-free version of linux in the near future. With Paradox adapter and Ferrox hacks, Hypervisor is beginning to loose it's grip on the sytem

I installed linux (YDL) on the PS3 for one reason only - to serve as an affordable platform on which to to do Cell development. I have no interest in games.

I was extremely disappointed with YDL 5 on the PS3 both for hardware and software reasons. The installation was very incomplete and I am getting quickly fed up with the number of packages that need to be installed for a useable system (it doesn't even come with "emacs" and "locate", for God's sake!) The default YUM configuration was very bad and I benefited greatly from this site in fixing this.

The lack of graphics acceleration is an embarrassment - windows move with lots of annoying flicker and brief multiple outlines. My first linux installation was MkLiunx on an 80 MHz powerpc machine (Mac 8100) more than 10 years ago and the graphics on that machine were quite comparable to the PS3, which must be an embarassment for Sony - it doesn't make them look very good. I get much better performance using my Powerbook as an Xwinodow server connecting to the PS3 with a 10baseT/801.11b link. At least windows move decently and my OpenGL apps work.

So for Cell development, the PS3 is a works well- for anthing else linux-related, I think it is far inferior to even the cheapest PC running linux.

sony had nothign to do with adapting linux into the ps3's hard drive it just had the power ot have it done so to blame sony for this fall out is actually wrong where as sony put the hard drive in for game saves and easy access to downlaodable games that they are to release in the future they had nothignt o do with adapting linux into it belive it or not if they wanted to they would have made it windows friendly since it would run alot smoother then linux on it
