I would just wait for the HDTV. It's really worth it.
But the problem with the SDTV is that the PAL can recieve NTSC 480i signal but the vice-versa doesn't work meaning that the NTSC TV will not be able to recieve the 576i signal. I tested it out with ps3 video mode on YDL. On my NTSC screen the picture is very messed up when I switch it to 576i.
